The Mackay Choral Society is about eighty men and women of diverse walks of life who share a passion for singing together as a choir. Our repertoire encompasses everything from Baroque to Jazz. We regularly perform to the community at venues as diverse as concert halls to open-air festivals.

Calling All Singers

Whether you sang in your High School choir, and gave up when you left, or are a closet shower and radio singer, we welcome you to our next project. No audition; we just ask for a love of singing and a willingness to practise, practise, PRACTISE!!!

Management Team

President Bernie Cheng

Bernie joined Mackay Choral Society in 2020. He has held the position of committee member, Treasurer and now President. Bernie’s goal is to increase the appeal of Mackay Choral Society to attract younger, dedicated members to ensure Mackay Choral Society which started in 1945 will continue to be relevant into the future.

 Vice President Ken Martin

Ken Martin has been in the choir now for 40 years and during that time he has been the president of the choir for 25 years and vice president 15 years, one of his greatest achievements was to instigate the fundraising and the building of the choir’s current premises in Andergrove Mackay which is currently named after him.

He continues to work hard at all the projects and performances that the choir undertakes as well as singing in the tenor line, (in fact he can’t remember any performance he may have missed in all that time)

He is more than happy to be elected onto this latest committee as he feels that he has lots of history and experience to call on when decisions have to be made, nonetheless, he has always been keen on generational change and at 86 this year perhaps next year it may be time to retire, but not from singing.

Secretary Isobel Gillman

Isobel joined Mackay Choral Society in 2012 and was almost immediately snapped up to assist with many of the administrative tasks required to make performances go smoothly. Handling ticket bookings and seating plans in the days before Trybooking was time consuming and labour intensive. With a background running a specialist medical practice she was well equipped for such tasks. As Liaison Officer from 2013 to 2016 she was responsible for meeting and greeting new members and ensuring everyone was kept informed of day to day matters. Isobel has also assisted over the years with performance advertising and maintaining the history files. Isobel was Secretary in 2015 and 2016 and resumed this role in 2020. Isobel brings an unsurpassed level of professionalism and integrity to the Management Committee.

Treasurer Jeanette Oberg

Jeanette has been an enthusiastic member of the Choral Society since 2004 and was President from 2007 until 2011 and again since 2018 – 2023.  With over 19 years experience as Chartered Accountant the Treasury of Mackay Choral Society is in safe hands.

Musical Director Nicole Thomson

Nicole has been Mackay Choral Society’s MD since 2016. The Musical Director only became part of the Management Committee in  2019. Traditionally the Management Committee is focused on the administration of the choir it has been invaluable having Nicole Thomson’s input in all our management decisions. There is no longer a disconnect between what we are all trying to achieve.

Committee Members:         

Prof Judith Brown AMJudith joined Mackay Choral Society in 2008 and was made a Life Member in 2015. Judith is our official accompanist and brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the Management Committee.
 
Daphne GoodsonDaphne has been actively involved in choir activities since joining in 1982, is a Life Member, and has been the librarian since 2010.
 
Lauren MenziesLauren has been a member of the choir since 2015.
 
Sarah-Jane ScottSarah-Jane joined Mackay Choral Society in 2014. Sarah-Jane has been our uniform/costume coordinator since 2016 and is a mainstay of our fundraising activities.
